Deck/Patio Design Challenge!
I've got a challenge for you! We're looking for you to get involved! Get creative! Come and join us! The entrance/step/deck at our back door is not safe. My mother-in fell off once a few years ago. I don't trust my parents to use it, and now with Ken and me somewhat unsteady on our feet, we really need to do something to make it safe. We've been talking about this for a number of years already, but now it is more urgent. The thing that has been delaying the work is an actual plan. It's kind of a complicated turn from the back door, to the driveway, to the back yard, to the garage, and we hope to somehow keep acess to all of these areas. So wer're inviting your ideas for a safe stairway/deck to our back door. More details to come! Stay tuned! Incentives, honours, all coming up. Stay tuned!

So happy to hear you are planning to work on your deck.I was also worried about the uneveness of it. Would you consider building something over the top of the existing one, lets say wood, with or without a railing and very wide stairs starting next to the house (close to the door with a hand rail and making the stairs stretch halfway across the patio so you can go down to the lawn, garage or driveway. Happy planning! If you have the extra dollars the composite decking is great! Very easy to clean and no slivers ever.
When we redid our deck, we bought a book of multiple deck designs and borrowed ideas from different ones.
Then Rachel drew up a design and then the guy who built it figured out how to make the ideas work.
Take a picture of your current layout, so we know what it looks like.
I'm with Marian - that's what we did too for our back deck. Don't think only square or rectangle. Pentagon or something can work. Make the first step out of the door big and flush with the floor inside.
That's my $0.02 worth not having any idea what your backstep looks like now.
Think it's a great idea though. We need to do the same with our front step. Every time our small group comes over I'm afraid someone is going to fall.

First step out the door,
flush with the floor
is great advise.
Our whole deck is flush with the kitchen floor and I count it as one of the best features.
